Clockwork Orange Chapter Summaries
PART TWO
Chapter 1
Alex is sentenced to fourteen years in state jail. A year later his parentscome to visit and tell him that Georgie has been killed whilst commitinga robbery. Alex is given a job in the prison chapel playing music from atape player at the appropriate times during the service. He starts to readthe bible on a regular basis, but unbenownst to the chaplain this is notout of a religous purpose but because he enjoys the violence that it contains.However, this gives him a good reputation with both the chaplain and theprison governor which he hopes to use to get out of jail more quickly. Thechaplain tells Alex of a new experimental treatment that might make Alexbe able to get out of jail more quickly. Alex is intrigued.
Chapter 2
A new prisoner in Alex's already overcrowded cell tries to sexually assaulthim, so Alex hits him. Because this prisoner is unpopular, all the othercellmates join in and beat him, and he dies. When the guards come to investigatewhat happened, Alex's cellmates all blame him for what happened. The nextday some important politicians and government officials visit Alex in hiscell and decide to volunteer him for an experimental conditioning programme.
Chapter 3
Alex signs a consent form for the programme even though the chaplaintries to talk him out of it. Alex receives a medical checkup and an injectionto start his first day at the programme.
Chapter 4
After the injection Alex feels weak and is put in a wheelchair and wheeledinto a film projector room. Alex is strapped into a chair with his eyesforced open so that he has to watch the films he is to be shown. The filmsshow people committing violent acts, but instead of getting excited by theviolence, Alex begins to feel ill (because of the injection he was givenearlier).
Chapter 5
The film show finishes and Alex is unstrapped, put back in the wheelchairand taken back to his room. Once back in his room and away from the filmsAlex begins to feel better. He sleeps and has a nightmare about the filmshe has been watching.
Chapter 6
Alex has more treatment sessions and comes to associate violence (andmusic) with feeling ill. So, he starts to develop an aversion to both violenceand his former favourite classical music. Alex tries to convince the Doctorto stop giving him treatments but fails. Alex ends up walking to his lastsession without either an injection or a wheelchair and realises that evenwithout the drugs, he still feels ill at the sight of violence. He is achanged man. Realizing this he panics and tries to attack a guard in orderto escape, but he cannot do it.
Chapter 7
Alex is taken to a room full of important people and the effectivenessof his conditioning is demonstrated for the audience.
