Clockwork Orange ChapterSummaries
Part One
Chapter 1
Alex and his Gang (Dim, Georgie and Pete) go to a milk bar where theytake some drugs in order to get in the mood to fight. They then go out ofthe bar and attack an old man, tearing up his library books and destroyinghis false teeth before beating him up. After which they go to a bar fullof people and buy them all drinks and snacks in order to bribe them intoproviding an alibi later in the evening. They then don masks and go outto rob a shop and beat up it's owners. They then head back to the bar andbuy more drinks for it's customers, so that when the police arrive to questionthem, they can safely pretend to have been there all night.
Chapter 2
They then go out and beat up a drunk, before running into a rival gangand having a fight. They steal a car and drive out into the suburbs wherethey trick a couple into letting them in by pretending to need help. Theman turns out to be a writer. They tear up the man's novel manuscript, destroyhis furniture and then attack him and gang rape his wife. They then driveback to the city.
Chapter 3
Alex and his gang push the car into a nearby canal, in order to stopthe police from finding it. They return to the Milk Bar and find it filledwith theatre people, one of whom begins to sing part of an Opera. Dim insultsher and throws things at her which annoys Alex, the music lover, so muchthat he punches him in the face. This leads Pete and Georgie to start anarguement with Alex, telling him not to pick on Dim. The friends part andmake arrangements to meet up the next day, but the atmosphere is tense.Alex goes home and listens to his favourite classical music before goingto sleep.
Chapter 4
Alex wakes up the next day and decides to skip school. He tells his parentsthat he is ill and goes back to sleep. Whilst asleep he has a nightmarein which his own gang, with Georgie now in charge, attack him. He wakesup to find his post-corrective advisor ringing the doorbell. His adviserwarns Alex to keep out of trouble and tells him that the police are watchinghim. Alex simply humours him and sends him on his way. He then spends themorning reading an article in the paper about the violence of modern youth.He then gets dressed and goes out to his favourite record shop. Whilst therehe meets two young girls and lures them back to his flat where he has sexwith them.
Chapter 5
Alex's parents return from work, and Alex's father tells him about anightmare he had about Alex being attacked and being helpless to defendhimself. This reminds Alex of his own nightmare. He tells his parents notto worry and then goes out to meet his friends, telling his parent thathe is going out to work. He finds the gang waiting for him at the bottomof the stairs to his block of flats. They threaten him and explain thatthey don't want him to be their leader anymore. They have their own planand want to go out and rob a house. Alex pretends to agree, but then fightsboth Georgie and Dim. He wins both fights and they surrender. Alex feelsthat everything has been sorted out, but his friends still bear a grudge.As a gesture of peace Alex agrees to carry out their plan, so they all headoff to rob an old woman's house.
Chapter 6
When they reach the house, Alex tries to convince the woman to open thedoor, but she will not. Alex, then climbs in through the upstairs bathroomwindow, intending to go downstairs and open the front door for the others.However, he gets into a struggle with the old woman and as he hears policesirens he realises that she must have called the police. He hits her onthe head and tries to escape through the front door. When he opens the doorDim, hits him in the face with a chain blinding him, so that he can't escape.He is then arrested by the Police and put in a van. Whilst in the van heis beaten.
Chapter 7
Alex arrives at the police station and is beaten a lot more and questioned.He eventually finds out that the woman he attacked died and he is to becharged with murder and sent to prison. (At this stage he is only fifteenyears old.)
