Dystopia Heading

Brave New World Synopsis

The novel is set in a dystopian future England in the year of our Ford632. Ford is worshipped as a god, and all of society is set up along capitalistprinciples.

The family structure has been destroyed and people are genetically engineeredto be of a specific class, and to enjoy and be suitable for the job theyare destined to get.

The citizens are also indoctrinated to buy and consume as much as possiblein order to keep production going, and people are discouraged from all hobbiesthat do not entail the consumption of expensive goods. (Eg. reading, thinkingetc.)

This combined with the advocation of free love, and a wonder drug calledsoma, reduces the population to a mass of unthinking zombies, with no realindividuality or feelings of their own.

However, a discontented member of the upper or Alpha class called BernardMarx goes to visit a savage reservation and brings one of them back withhim. The Savage is appalled by what he sees and reacts violently againstit.

He has a direct confrontation with the World Controller, Mustapha Mondin which they debate the morality of Brave New World, in which the Savageclaims the right to personal choice, struggle and unhappiness rather thanempty, unfeeling happiness.

The Savage then runs away to live on his own, but is hounded by the pressuntil he commits suicide.
